Artificial intelligence: It’s about to cause a major upheaval in jobs (Blog 18)

A discussion that is commonly spoken about in today’s society is related to Artificial Intelligence. We see it in movies, and are curious about wonders of the future, but this article explains that artificial intelligence may cause a big disruption for paying jobs. But, luckily artificial intelligence will also create many jobs. This article was uploaded November 9th and written by Bob Violino. Over the five years, artificial intelligence has rapidly developed. Computer vision and speech has been enhanced. It is explained that many jobs today are in charge of multiple tasks, and realistically an AI cannot take all of the tasks, most likely just one. It may not eliminate your job, but enhance your performance. It is proven that artificial intelligence is more accurate than human programming. Artificial intelligence also plays a big influence in already existing jobs. In the article, the example used was the uber app. It is artificial intelligence that communicates with the uber drives about where they should be located.

I believe that artificial intelligence may take some jobs but not all of the jobs. Artificial itnellegiance incapable of taking very simple and small jobs away, but while jobs disappear, news ones will also be created. I’m interested in seeing the difference between human programming and artificial intelligence. Although both are very different, I believe they both have their own value and worth.

Japan Placed 10th in Global Ranking for Communication Technology (17)

Recently, Japan placed placed tenth in global ranking for information and communication technology; Japan has advanced one spot from last year. Iceland is at the top of the list that is out of 176 countries, which is very impressive. The four countries after Iceland is South Korea, Switzerland, Denmark and Britain. Japan has a high percentage of 96 related to how many of their households own mobile phones. But, their percentage of household users with computers is lower than Iceland. Although, surprisingly China is at a low rank of 80, despite their astonishing progress over the years. Within Asia, Japan is ranked third. Interestingly enough, within the surveys of the ranking countries, it is noticed that there is a gender gap with internet usage. More men are online compared to women. In the article, it is stated that one in seven women use the internet and one in five men use the internet. The only continent with different gender results is Africa, but the survey suggests that the most probable result in the future will include men being the dominant online presence as well. The survey also suggested that with the growth of information and technology, there will be new government and business opportunities, but a potential societal change.

Personally, I have already witnessed a societal change, but not a positive one. But, I am hoping that at the very least, there will be a positive governmental and business influence.

Trump admin drops Obama-era proposal to require communication technology in cars

Recently, Trump’s administration has requested for all new vehicles to have a wireless communication system for safety reasons. In the near future, their goal is for their cars to wirelessly communicate to other cars. Movements will also be detected, used to avoid car accidents. But, this proposal is actively under consideration, there has been no confirmation so far. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reviewing the proposal, but there have been many comments on this certain proposal, so it will take a long time for them to come up with a final decision. But, while Trump is in power, they are very reluctant to spend high costs on the auto industry due to how he has been administrating the United States of America.

The proposal has good and positive intentions. There is an alarming high rate of car crashes daily. Many lives are lost and people have been left disabled and impaired. Developing a communication technology software for cars is a realistic and positive proposal. But, this proposal seems highly expensive. I believe the proposal will be taken under serious consideration when the United States can actually financially afford. Perhaps by the time  there is a new president in power.

The Next Step in Communication Technology

In order for progression, a next step should be established. In this article, they highlight on the next step for technology; outer space. Communications satellite and all spacecrafts  have to receive messages, and this is where the importance of communication technology rises. The demands for communication systems for spacecrafts is increasing. But, the quality of space communication is limited due to the current technology we have. Currently, they use radio frequencies but, radio signal strength weakens as the distance between the spacecraft and Earth increases. NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has taken initiative and started a program where they will work on the improvement of communication technology within spacecrafts. Their intention is to develop something original; nothing that has already been developed. Along with this program, jobs will be made. Their future equipment will be more efficient and use less energy compared to the amount of energy they use now; which will allow more expeditions to take place related to different, but important missions.

This is an interesting and important matter. In order for proper human understanding, knowing what is out in outer space is a crucial factor. There is a lot of unknown potential in outer space that can benefit Earth.

New VR Tech Aims to Take Surround-Sound to the Next Level

Virtual reality’s goal is in no way settle. Their goal is to completely place humans in virtual reality. People can now feel vibrations, temperature, and pressure within virtual reality. They have found a way to take hold over a human being in virtual reality, and it is through sound. A development they call “spatial audio,” mimics many noise aspects that humans expect to hear in the real world. This allows humans to physically react to virtual reality. Human will be able to identify the location of noise, for example; wind in the trees above your head or a car behind you. Spatial audio is very powerful and influential on the human brain. Spatial audio mimics how humans interpret sound in the real world. Virtual reality headset makers are using realistic soundscapes to improve the quality of  virtual reality content they release. The HoloLens, made by Microsoft is a mixed-reality headset made with spatial audio that is for sale. The sale price is three thousand dollars. The study of ear shapes and locating the source of sound in three dimensions lead to Microsoft establishing their spatial audio algorithms. The progress of virtual reality will be used for more mainstream purposes as well. For example, therapeutic reasons, trauma and phobia reasons as well.

The research and progress Microsoft has made is baffling and astonishing at the same time. Virtual reality has a strong future ahead of itself, and I believe Microsoft will have a big role within virtual reality’s success.

Demographics, technology changing the face of Alberta’s workforce

Recently, the Business Development Bank of Canada released a survey. According to the results of their survey, in order for businesses to stay competitive, they must adapt to and develop current technology. Within the next decade, the labour work force will decrease drastically due to technology. But, Alberta’s workforce will increase by 1.2 percent annually for ten years due to the amount of young families in Alberta. Once you invest in technology, the need for workers will gradually decrease. It is advised for companies to increase training, benefits, salaries, contacting schools and immigrant communities. It is quoted that increasing technology will also increase the standard of living. Canada is in need for people with technological skills. But, people who have low-skilled jobs will be left behind the technological revolution.

It is interesting and establishing when we look at the progress humans have made with technology. I personally think we are in need for technological advancement. But, I can’t help but worry for those who will be left behind. If we begin to train these low-skilled workers on how to work with technology, no one will be left behind. It is interesting to imagine a world with advanced technology because our standard of living will also be advance.

UK Proposes Internet Firm levy With Web Safety Plan

Britain is strongly concerned for the safety of everyone who is active online. A new proposal has occurred with the intention of controlling internet safety. They are looking to help fund their project that will take action on online safety strategy with the intention to prevent cyber bullying and eliminating risks for children or other online vulnerable users. Social medias like Twitter, Google and Facebook have been called out on various times by Britain’s Prime Minister, Theresa May to take action on the hate that is on each of these platforms used by millions each day. Karen Bradley, digital minister proposed a code of practice within the internet safety realm. This code of practice stands for removing intimidating or humiliating content and host online safety classes in schools. But, this will not be a new tax of social medias.

Compared to Germany’s way of handling online safety, I believe Britain has the better approach. Britain has brought up this issue in a way where it is easy for their citizens and for the social medias to accommodate. But, perhaps there should be a fee or tax for social medias that cannot control the hate that has been uploaded onto their sites.
